Taking Flight

TAKING FLIGHT transforms lives, schools, and communities by providing local sophomores and juniors with academic support, financial assistance, cultural engagement, and leadership training to become first generation college students.

Area teachers will provide TAKING FLIGHT students with ACT test taking skills along with classes which will aid English, Math, Reading, and Science proficiency. Students will meet weekly at the 502 Building (502 S. Pearl Ave.) with teachers, mentors, and guest speakers. Everyone is expected to take the relevant ACT test at the beginning of each segment to provide a baseline to judge progress. At the end of the school year, students will take the ACT.

TAKING FLIGHT is provided with very little cost to the students. All materials for the program are provided, and the cost to individual families for the whole year is only $20. We know education benefits the individual, the family, and our whole community.

No one lives in a vacuum, and we believe it is important to get to know our neighbors. Participation in TAKING FLIGHT includes a “Pay it Forward” model where our students are expected to get involved with various service projects around Joplin. These will include, but are not limited to, serving meals to underprivileged in our area, participating in community wide service projects, and mentoring younger members of the program.

Community leaders will speak to TAKING FLIGHT students on a regular basis about what they do for a living, what skills they needed for success, and challenges they have encountered along the way. We believe students benefit from interacting with positive role models from our area.
